Happy Independence day everyone! I realize that the fireworks, cookouts, exce
ss calories and celebrating was yesterday but Independence day is even better this year because everyone is off today too! The 4th is one of the best holidays because you have every great reason to get together, enjoy each other's company but without the stress of presents, too many decorations and tacky sweaters. The 4th of July is a nostalgic holiday for everyone with any sort of a childhood. My favorite 4ths were in our dead end (the word culdesac did not become popular until Michigan folks invaded middle TN a la Saturn) were so much fun. Every family would ge
t out in front of their house with their bag of loot and I remember running back and forth looking at the vast array of stink bombs, sparklers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, etc and everything else eager fathers would buy in attempts to out do the other neighbors. My parents began celebrating with the Myatts when I was approximately ten and have continued pretty much ever since except for the original baseball trip or vacation. Yesterday was our first married 4th of July. This weekend is special for us b/c P proposed last year on the 2nd and the whole weekend felt so exciting with the all the fireworks etc obviously all done for our engagement :) This year like any other "first" we were SOOOOO busy. We started the day with a treck out to Murfreesboro to visit P's brother, sister-in-law and nephew. They started celebrating every state and this year was Hawaii. As we entered we were given leis, some sort of fruity blue drink, and we all head strait for the pool. We were lucky to have perfect weather and
everyone swam for hours until the Hawaiian themed lunch of coconut shrimp, Hawaiian slaw, rice, bread, and every other carb one could think of. If Adkins weren't already dead of a heart attack, he would have died of shock from the massive around of carbs consumed...and it was all delicious! I made these cupcakes (pictured right) and although they did not coordinate with the Hawaiian theme, they were festive anyway. After lunch we traveled down 840 to Brentwood to celebrate at Jennas Dad's house, Leon. This cook out is a huge Ewing tradition and is so successful largely due to the amazing amount of meat that Leon smokes, so good, (PETA not invited). The Ewing celebration included a cornhole tournament complete with a bracket on a cardboard box. P and I played "the trifecta" and were out first largely due to my terrible cornhole abilities. Next Jenna and Taylor tried their abilities against the trifecta but this was no good. Fin
ally, Kate and Travis put their cornhole game face on and totally dominated. They won the tournament and the pride of the party. After cornhole we all returned to our inner ten year old and began spelling out words with sparklers. (pictures thanks to Travis and Kate R) I have to admit this was sooooo much fun! Lastly we went to Nolensville at watched fireworks and then went back to the Myatt's house for dessert and even more fun. Ben, Hunter and Sally joined and Hunter
found some fireworks stashed away in the abyss of his room and began setting them of in the driveway. Lastly we enjoyed some wonderful southern living/ Ina Garden worthy pies made by Mrs. Alicia and my Momma! Around 11pm, the tired newlyweds went back to Franklin and quickly fell asleep! We are learning that every holiday is so much longer but that much more fun :) I hope everyone else had as wonderful day as we did!
