Oxford reunion

I've totally fallen off the blog bandwagon. I've been legitimately busy, but I can't get over the very severe lack of blogging. Earlier in the month, I went to Oxford and reunited with all my favorite choir kids. The choir alumni are invited back every homecoming to sing the anthem on the field and it is always so fun. Last year I was unable to make it and I was so excited to hang in my favorite town with my favorite people. Friday I left work and got to Oxford around 7. We went to Philip's grocery and I had so much fun catching up and being around people who find it normal to sing loudly in restaurants.
My peeps!!!!

Thomas and I go back.. I mean way back. He used to come to the AOII house so much that Mama Reid thought he was my brother.

The game was really fun and WE WON!!!! Rebel fans have the most character out of any  SEC team...well in any conference. We have had so many losing seasons that we have the mantra "we may not win every game but we've never lost a party"...well being preggers definitely changes things. Winning, the grove, seeing friends, singing with DT were all truly amazing, but...being completely sober in the grove/game/square was quite a different experience.

Famous friends! Thanks Jenny for the picture!

After a really long day of the grove, game, square, etc. we went back to Ann Marie's house and had so much fun. Well, not the kind of fun that most people would expect, but this felt like old times, only thing lacking was a theme and costumes.

I loved being in Oxford and hope I can go back in December to see all the lights and magic of Christmas!
Hotty Toddy!

one year ago.

One year ago seems like yesterday. This week has been weighing heavily on me a lot. I keep feeling the need to document it. I don't see how I could ever forget any detail from last year but I feel the need to write it down for some reason. Of course this is all from my point of view so I feel a bit selfish like I'm not presenting it fairly, but it's all I know.

Last year at this time I was embarking on my first concert as a high school choir director. To say I was nervous is quite the understatement. I knew nothing of sound and lighting equipment, choir formations, and entertaining parents who actually attended concerts. My Mom had not been feeling well for a while and she was admitted to the hospital. She called me multiple times and said she was going to have her gallbladder removed, it was a relatively easy procedure and she would be out after the weekend. They felt terribly that they could not come to the concert and my Mom even cried on the phone. The concert was okay, a lot of really sweet friends came and I learned a lot.

Friday I was supposed to go to a wedding for friends John and Ryan in D.C. I remember talking to Dad and asking if I should still go and he kept saying yes, she would be better very soon and that I should still go. I caught an early flight to D.C. and had a marvelous time at their wedding. Everything single detail was perfect. We had so much fun and I laughed all weekend long. I kept in contact with Dad and he kept saying Mom was doing okay and they were running tests. By Saturday I was itching to get home and see Mom. I knew by the time I got home there would be a reason for her feeling badly.

I got on the flight home on Sunday and for the first time ever puked on the plane. I usually don't get motion sickness but I did that day. It was even worse because half of the flight was service men and women coming home. They were all so excited and sweet and kept offering to pay people to use their phones. Of course nobody took their money and let them call loved ones to say they were about to take off. What a welcome home. I puked (a lot) right when we were landing and it was just awful. I just hung my head and never made eye contact with any of them. The flight attendant came back and was incredibly sweet. She said, "oh my gosh, honey!" and immediately began helping me clean my nasty clothes. Even the pilot came out and apologized and I felt so badly because it wasn't his fault. I was so embarrassed, I couldn't wait to get off the plane.

Before the epic flight, I talked with my parents and my Mom was allowed to go home. I was thrilled. She said she missed us and wanted us to come over. We were going to go there right after I landed but P said I smelled "pukey" so we went home and I bathed and changed.

We arrived and they were sweet. Ben came home from college and we were all just hanging out like normal. I told them about my epic flight and we were all laughing etc. and then life changed forever. Mom was sitting in her normal spot on the couch and I was in the middle and Ben was on the right. She was looked us in the face and said she had cancer. It was very advanced and there were not tons of options but she was going to do everything possible to fight it. She didn't shed a tear in front of us and immediately we turned to mush. She was so sweet and kept apologizing to P because she was sorry he was going to have to do this again. I don't know how long we cried. It felt like forever and then no time all at the same time. She just kept comforting us and it really was all about us and how we were feeling. I remember feeling badly because this news was about HER and all I could do was sob and she was taking care of me! It should be the other way around!

I know this sounds so stupid but I kept thinking of how I wish I hadn't led with that stupid puke story. Clearly there were more important things going on and I was blabbing about puking on a plane and "how awful" it was when Mom had been given such terrible news. But that's how naive we all were. Mom is the strongest person I've ever known. She seemed invincible and the idea of her having something so serious was just out of my realm of thinking.

It's such a strange range of emotions when you get news like that. At first it was the first obvious breakdown. I wanted to shake myself and wake up from this awful nightmare. Then within an hour I was faking a trip to the bathroom to research treatment options on my phone. As we were all hanging out we would try to lift each other's spirits but the haunting heaviness of this news was too thick. The boys went somewhere (see, I guess I'm already forgetting stuff) and I asked her personally...so is there no hope? And she said, "no, no, there is hope. It will be difficult but I believe there is hope". We stayed over there and I think we ate but that is a blur too.

Finally P and I came home and I felt a cross between sinking into our couch and never getting up and driving back over to our house and getting in bed with Mom and never leaving. Half of me wanting to find my care bear from my childhood and just pretend I was 6 and relive every minute with her again.

I cancelled our family's Oktoberfest and immediately I began getting texts and calls asking why this big event was cancelled! That made it feel more real. People knowing. Again, such weird things you think about but I remember thinking about the clothes I was wearing and how I could never wear them again and honestly I haven't.

Everything became before that minute and then after. Life never was and never will be the same.

Gender Reveal Party

We were so blessed to have a gender reveal party on Sunday organized by our friends Jenna and Christina. P and I really felt so amazed with the amount of people who came and we left saying to each other how fortunate we feel to have such amazing family and friends.
Whitney made a delicious lemon (MY FAVORITE) cake! Do we have talented friends or what?

Cutting the cake!

Jenna made this cute box where people could vote for either a girl or boy and there were balloons inside that would reveal the gender. Very pinterest-y.

Cute friends Christina and Sarah.

Everyone brought delicious food! Yum!

Brett voting for a girl!

It's a BOY!

I love this picture!

A great view at Arrington Vineyards! Such a wonderful venue and day.

Sweet Dad, so glad he was able to come.

Our amazing friends! Thank you so much! What a wonderful day, we really are spoiled rotten! We are beyond excited for Baby Boy Pratt!

21 weeks belly!

Holy Lord, I'm huge. I think I've been in denial about how big I look. We have been AWFUL about taking pictures. I really haven't wanted to. The concept of taking pictures of me getting bigger has not felt too appealing but today I bought a baby book and there are all these slots for belly pics so I thought I best get on it.
Excuse the hair, face, well everything. This was coming home after choir rehearsal after 13 hour work day.

I'm not complaining, it is what it is. You're pregnant, a baby has to grow and as it gets bigger, so will you... but still, something about capturing the spread leaves something to be desired from this lifelong dieter.

We found out yesterday what Baby Pratt is and our sweet friends are having a really small gender reveal party on Saturday so we are waiting to tell then! All I'll say is that baby Pratt is very happy and healthy!

Pinterest project

If you're anything like me, you pin a million posts on pinterest and maybe bake/create like less than 1% of them! I'm throwing P a 30th birthday party in October and have created a board and pinned my little heart away. Today I actually created something... I seriously got lost in craft world and worked on this for 2 hours. I know it's not the Mona Lisa but it is probably the craftiest thing I've ever done (sad, right?)

the before "inspiration pinned" picture
the finished project
I know it looks like nothing but I am pretty proud. Crafty, not so much, but this is as good as it gets, folks. I'll laminate them soon and we will hang them somewhere in the house. Southern living will seriously not stop calling.

You're always a day a way..

You sing it, Annie!
Tomorrow we FINALLY found out with baby Pratt is! I am beyond excited. I literally don't think I've ever, ever, ever been this ready, anxious, excited, nervous, distracted, etc. by anything in my entire life. If someone offered me a large sum of money to wait to find out, I wouldn't take it. I want, need, HAVE to know. The fact that I have to work and attempt to be normal until this is just ridiculous. You want something kids, we all do. Deal.
I haven't said that of course, but you know, but the day is still young.
Last night we got out my Mom's stethoscope and listened for the baby's heartbeat. I read in a book you can start hearing it around this time so we listened for it. Philip found it and I actually could never tell what I was listening to. Further proof, I did NOT miss my calling in the medical world. No worries though, I was thrilled P could tell what it was and am so pumped to see baby Pratt tomorrow!

HAPPY MONDAY!

Brother

I was able to see my little brother twice this weekend. He brought us both back sunglasses from his epic trip to California and today on our bike ride we brought a little extra cool to suburbia.

Happy weekend!

Baby Pratt's firsts!

I haven't bought almost anything for our baby! We find out sex next week and I think I that will turn into a very different story.

We were given some new happies recently and all of it is SO fun since it's all the baby's "firsts". P's sister, Ashley gave us our first burp cloth which I couldn't be prouder of. Who is lucky enough to get a sis in law who will buy into my agenda of making our baby's first words, "hotty toddy". This is even a bigger deal because she is a huge Auburn fan. Earlier she gave the baby his/her first book. This book means so much to me because my Mom read it to us a lot and I'm so happy our baby has their own copy! So sweet.
First stuffed animal. It's kind of weird because I don't really like clutter or stuffed animals, but this one is sweet because one of Mom's nurse friends gave it to her in the hospital so we decided it would be from Mom to the baby. We named it Thomas after St. Thomas. Not something we would normally buy, but so happy to have it!

Already showed this picture, but we bought this onesie in NYC and I bought the humpty dumpty in an antique store recently. I think we will put baby's first tooth or a lock of hair in it.

Lastly, this butter dish...okay it's random. Jadeite dishes are my favorite and I'm pretty much a 90 year old. When P and I were dating, he surprised me with jadeite dishes and I couldn't have been more excited. It's my favorite color green and most of my nursery ideas center around...this butter dish.
I'll blame the hormones.

Feels like Fall!

I haven't done too much with our house lately. One would think with a bambino on the way I would be cray about making everything perfect, but...I don't know. It all seems too overwhelming. Not that I've done much today...BUT it is kind of starting to look around fall!

New tea towels.

I am super crafty and made this centerpiece. Or...I thought of something where I could dump tiny pumpkins in a jar and call it a crafty day.

And number 2. Good Lord, move over Martha. I hope pinterest is ready for the explosion of fan crazy that is about to happen!

Happy fall, y'all!

weekend in review

How is it already Sunday? I find it extremely unfair that weekends go by in quick blink of an eye!

Friday night my choir sang the anthem at the football game. They did such a fantastic job and I couldn't get over the difference in a year. Last season, I was so nervous and it was still an awkward transition of the kids not really knowing me, trusting me, and liking me. Now, I actually looked forward to seeing them and honestly enjoy being around them. They are funny, talented, and smart students and I can't imagine being any luckier.

Saturday morning, Sharon and Ashley took me maternity clothes shopping. It was... different. I know people always talk about how beautiful you are when you're expecting and you have that "glow" but I feel like I missed that day. I'm seriously not looking for a compliment, but sadly I don't think I am one of those lucky cute preggy girls, but I just look chubby. Whatever, it's only for a little while but it makes clothes shopping a little circus, fun house mirror-esque. The store we went to had really cute clothes and was actually trendier than I am in normal life. I tried on skinny, maternity pants which was the funniest sight ever and no I will never take a picture. Sharon did treat me to a pair of corduroy pants, jeans, and two tops. She is so sweet and this was a great start to my new wardrobe. I have to admit, I have been avoiding going because I knew this was something my Mom and I would have done together and it was too sad. I had a moment of panic when Ashley and Sharon pulled up and started to tear up and luckily P was there and went to talk to them while I got it together. After I calmed down, we went shopping and really did have a fun time. As we were ringing up my items, the sales clerk asked for my phone number and I gave it to her and she said, "oh are you Michelle?" Instantly a lump formed in my throat but I somehow kept it together and said, "no I'm Natalie" and she said, "that's odd it says this number belongs to a Michelle". Then she took down my info. Anyway, Sharon said maybe Mom had shopped there before. I kind of doubt it because I think she would have told me and it was kind of trendy but I just let it go. Then I told P and he said maybe she was there and that's how she told you which of course make me a pile of mush but that's the way I'm going to think of it. Sneaky, sweet Momma!

Saturday night we saw friends that we hadn't seen in a while at Porta Via in Franklin, yummy.

Sunday P went shooting and I went to church. Sounds like a country song. I wore my new maternity pants, which I do think accentuate the belly and a "kind" old church lady told me I was "showing more than almost 5 months". Thanks. a. lot. I got curious if I was indeed showing "too much" and took this picture in the bathroom while I was the only one in there.

I wanted to respond to church lady with something snarky like, "oh that's funny because you have more age spots than most people your age" but we had a sermon all about being nice and yayayaya so I kept my mouth shut. People always say they feel good about doing the right thing. Not this time.

Lastly, I went to get some water from the church kitchen in between services and I saw this. There is always wine in there, nothing new but the PBR cracked me up. I have no idea what this was from but I wish I had been there. Maybe the priests are planning their own Sunday Funday?

Labor Day

P and I really enjoyed Labor Day this year. We hung out with friends Friday and Saturday nights and got a lot done around our house. A couple of weeks ago our dishwasher leaked and messed up the trim in our kitchen. Luckily, P found it pretty quickly and it did nothing to our floors, but the paint on our trim looked pretty bad. He painted it Monday morning and since the fumes were so bad, we decided to get out of the house.
We decided to take a scenic drive to Leiper's Fork and eat at Puckett's Grocery. The weather was kind of dreary but we still got out and walked in a lot of the shops and ate too much southern goodness.

Excited to see Noble Springs there. I always get excited when I see it, even though I don't like cheese. We were supposed to make a stop at the farm this weekend but the rain did not cooperate. I would like to submit a form complaint to the weather gods. You've got lots of other days to downpoor, please avoid holidays.

Happy Labor Day!

Mrs. Alicia

No one, I mean no one will replace you loved one. Everywhere and all day you will be reminded of your loss and your heart will be tugged over the most random situations. No one will ever be able to replace or become your “mom” or whomever you lost, however…sometimes a person is sent who becomes a close second.

My Mom would always do the most thoughtful and quiet things for her loved ones. Even though I’m approaching 30, she would always buy me a small “going back to school” present, like a plant for my room, a flameless candle, etc. She would also spend countless hours helping me “prepare”. After getting my first “big girl” job, she drove down to Oxford and spent the night. We went to Walmart and bought all the cleaning supplies we thought we would need and she brought amazing music posters, a glue gun and sticks, and everything she could envision needing. As we arrived and the vice principal walked us down to my new room (which didn’t have air conditioning… in July… in Mississippi) we were shocked when we looked around. The previous teacher had not cleaned… anything! Every single paper, binder, post-it, etc. was all still there. The vice principal left and as I wanted to cry because of the mess, Mom cried and said, “oh I’m so proud of you” and gave me a huge hug. Immediately, I made myself “buck up” and we just looked… what to do first? Go to Chilli’s. It was lunch time anyway and we needed a plan..and another trip to Wal-Mart.

We went to Chili’s in Batesville with a notepad and made a list of what more things we needed (approximately 50 trash bags…not exaggerating), enough cleaning supplies to disinfect a fraternity house, and even more sticky stuff to cover the gross pee colored walls. We began cleaning and throwing away mountains of old stuff. I thought we would literally never get done. As soon as one project, like cleaning out 50 folders that all contained the entire previous year’s work (plus an amazing number of middle school notes, and a list of current couples…record keeping is extremely important in middle school) we would feel some sense of accomplishment and then BAM! another mountain of work. Finally we got to a point (after 10 hours) of total heat exhaustion and dust overload that we were done (the principal kept “checking” aka hinting we should leave over the intercom, “Ladies we are all heading out for the day..You’ll have time to work on your room when school starts” “NOT WITH MY MOMMA” I thought! So we stayed with the custodians.) The room looked AMAZING and we had both lost around 10lbs of water weight because of how flipping hot it was. I was so proud of it and I only had to finish my wall of Mississippi Musicians.

Later that night we went to a Mexican restaurant and both had a well deserved margarita and made it an early night. My Mom always and I mean always could make a game plan. There was no problem too big for her to divide and conquer. Even in hospice care on the last couple of days she was attempting to make charts of the nursing rotation so she could feel more in control of who was providing care.

Since then I’ve missed the little things the most. When July rolled around, I dreaded going to my classroom for many reasons. One the air was broken. (how does this always happen?... I think they turn off the air to save money but good Lord, someone has to realize rooms aren’t put together in the literal day before school begins…these are the same people who determined that teachers quit getting paid 10 minutes after the last bell of the day. Clearly we always leave then..I hope you’re picking up on the sarcasm. One day last week, I left at 3:30 and I thought omg I’m leaving so early and then realized I still worked 1.5 hours for free and that was the lightest day in FOREVER… but I digress) Two, I was still in the hiding pregnancy phase which was accompanied by severe exhaustion and nausea, but most importantly, it was hard knowing that my Mom wouldn’t be with me. The year before she once again she spent countless hours organizing years of choral music, t-shirts from literally 10 years and older (one box contained a dead mouse head), and hundreds of trophies to clean. Since I wasn’t a new teacher to this school, I knew there wasn’t as much to do, but just knowing she wouldn’t be there with me was so difficult.

Sometimes, people will offer to help, but at times I feel if it can’t be my Mom, I would rather just do it alone. Shopping, pedicures, even cleaning my classroom all have so many memories with my Mom. Sometimes I can make myself do these things with other but often, I just feel like I should do things by myself to avoid being sad.

That is until Mrs. Alicia enters the picture. She was my Mom’s best friend and although they look very different and of course Mrs. Alicia has her family and is not my Mom, however, so many of our family memories include Mrs. Alicia and her family. I feel comfortable with her and am able to say I like or dislike something, and she is so thoughtful.

She really is the one person (excluding my brother, Dad and P) that I feel I can be completely honest with. And honestly, I couldn’t be luckier with them, but there is something about a girl sometimes needing another girl. I can tell her if I am sad, I can say what I am really thinking... about anything. After you lose someone, people are really supportive for about 2 weeks and then people get busy. It’s just the way life is. Friends get busy, and life happens. It’s nothing personal, but you can’t help but feel lonely. Mrs. Alicia has literally been that one person who I feel is 100% supportive, has no agenda, and is close to my Mom that can be. She helped redecorate my classroom in July (with Ben) and always asks me questions about little things, like my Mom did. “Have your boxes for the choral library come in yet? Did they ever get under your risers? “I don’t think I have anyone else in my life is so concerned with my little boring things that most people are too busy for. Saturday we went to get a pedicure and lunch and she gave me this little water cozie for my classroom. It’s small, adorable and so something my Mom would have done. It’s not all about getting things. I can clearly buy myself a water cozie. It’s the thoughtfulness of it all. It’s a small “happy” with a purpose and a surprise.

I hope everyone who loses someone has a Mrs. Alicia. No one can ever replace your loved one and deep down, I don’t want anyone to replace Mom. She was one of a kind and I will always place her on the pedestal that she deserves. At times, I want to isolate my feelings and just bulldoze my way. I’ll start feeling lonely and sad and make a plan of how to do it all and just keep going. Then I’m reminded that it’s okay to feel this way and to accept help or just comfort. Sometimes I’m so sad it hurts to breathe, however having Mrs. Alicia in my life makes things bearable and reminds me of what it feels like to be cared for in that maternal way.

I’m so thankful for my Mrs. Alicia and sincerely hope you find yours, too.

hotty toddy!

Hotty Toddy and happy Sunday! Although I wasn't in the grove this weekend, I am so proud that Ole Miss won our season opener. I know it was only Central Arkansas, but we've had enough character building seasons where we've lost our first game, so this feels nice!

The grove really is a beautiful slice of Heaven and I can't wait to get back!

Hotty Toddy, go rebs!
